Guardians of the Galaxy (2021) Review

I beat Guardians of the Galaxy on March 12, 2023, at 4:50 pm.

Going into Guardians, I knew it was supposed to be something special. Having played it two years after its release, I had heard a handful of opinions, all of them being good, surprisingly. The problem going into this playthrough for me was the MCU burnout. To me, the MCU has oversaturated superheroes and Marvel properties in general. And, the only reason I gave Guardians of the Galaxy a chance is that it had been a bit since I stopped consuming MCU projects, and the game seemed like it didn't follow the movie storylines.

And, holy cow...This game was AMAZING. The story they went along with felt natural, the exploration was fun, and the teamwork mechanics were downright perfect. Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot all had personalities that made me care about the choices I made like I had disappointed them in real life.

I started playing as an obligation to myself to play a "must play" game, just to say I rolled credits on it and carry on with my other gaming tasks. But, the more I played, the more I wanted to search for the collectibles, the more I wanted to stand around the Milano and JAM to the perfectly orchestrated list of music Eidos-Montréal put together for this game. The music takes the journey to a whole other level, and this includes original game music too. The pop/rock hits that play during Team Huddle events hit just right, especially when I had successful pep talks. I probably spent an hour total listening to "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" in the Milano alone.

The collectibles were fun and surprisingly easy to grab as well. Only having to be responsible for two different collectibles, Outfits and Guardian Collectibles, was refreshing compared to other games. The Guardian Collectibles are fun little trinkets to pick up that gave opportunities to talk to the crew members and flesh them out a little more. The Outfits were cool because...who doesn't like playing dress up?? What was even more fun about the different styles was that the developers took the time to credit the source material for each style. Whether that costume was tied to the MCU movies, or if it had spawned in a comic book run, it was enjoyable to see credit where credit was due.

Overall, the adventures I had playing as Peter Quill with his crew were nothing short of fantastic. Each collectible I found felt rewarding as there was purpose to investigating small nooks and crannies. The music is exactly what anyone familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy should expect. And, the storytelling took me on a truly one-of-a-kind experience that makes me wish I could experience it for the first time again. The only downside was a side swipe of an ending, but after sitting on that for a while, I've come to appreciate it.

This game is perpetually on sale and if you have the means to pick it up or if you have ever wondered how this game would be, I absolutely recommend it.

I give Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (2021) a 9/10.
